This important event, for the first time in the world, was held in Mashhad by the

There were 46 attendants from across the world namely,24 of whom were lecturers

Temporomandibular syndrome, dentistry office design based on hypnosis and
Neuroimaging in Hypnodontics.
In this congress,48 presentations were given as lectures, movies, demonstrations,

The Scientific Secretary of the First World Congress on Hypnodontics was Dr.
Mehdi Fathi,Associate Professor of Cardiac anesthesia at Mashhad University of
Medical Sciences whereas the Executive Secretary was Dr. Majid Eshghpour,
Associate Professor of Maxillofacial surgery at Mashhad University of Medical
Sciences. They were dedicated to hold this program in the best possible way.
The main objective to be achieved was to promote knowledge and awareness in
this highly controversial field.
Dental procedures can cause unbearable fear and anxiety for the patient as the
instruments, tools and the procedures can be perceived by the patient; Thus the
dentist must adopt practical and pertinent approaches which help minimize the
derad.
Dr Fathi says wherever communication between the patient and the physician is
concerned,a therapeutic rapport cannot be separated from the psychological and
therapeutic dimension of the treatment plan.In this regard, any technique that can
free the environment from anxiety and suffering will draw sufficient interest
interest and one of these techniques is hypnosis.
According to Dr. Fathi, one of the applications of hypnosis in dentistry pertains to
the management of chronic pain disorders as a rather common complaint. Of note,
hypnosis can efficiently help in the management of temporomandibular symptoms
and related headaches as well as similar aches in the face and skull including nerve
irritability and TMJ pains.
Highlighting the issues the dentists often have to deal with,he attributed the lack of
cooperation on the part of the patient to the activation of gag reflex or the fear of
harm, which can both be effectively managed under hypnosis as the patient will be
separated,or in other words,dissociated from the surrounding.This enables him/her
to keep the mouth open for as long as needed with minimal sense of discomfort.
The Scientific Secretary of the First World Congress on Hypnodontics stressed the
role of hypnosis in managing teeth chattering and the dental prostheses. The
presence of an external object in the oral cavity might be disturbing for the
patient .Hypnosis can help the patient to tolerate prosthesis. He added
that, hypnosis can also act very efficiently in the field of pediatric dentistry as it
helps children sit on the dentistry unit with ease and comfort, creating the desirable
therapeutic communication with the therapist.
One of the desirable traits of the usage of hypnosis is the pain management during
the operation and also the lack of any pain after the treatment, since some of the
patients are afraid of injection. If we are not able to use injection, hypnosis can be
used given the circumstances and the fact that hypnosis by itself is harmless,he
added.
Dr. Fathi also noted that hypnosis may not succeed in every case. There are always
limitations for every modality and hypnosis is not an exception in this
regard.Nevertheless, the therapist’s mastery in the field can promote the patient’s
suggestibility, which in turn yields positive effects.
The Scientific Secretary of the First World Congress on Hypnodontics explained
the effects of hypnosis in decreasing the anxiety of the patient and increasing the
ease of therapy.
In another part of his speech Fathi, stressing the need for dentists’ awareness in
this regard, said:” For long,we have provided dentists essential guidelines through
our Association, there is still need for improvement at a national scale.
Mentioning the presence of both the president of the international society of
hypnosis and ISH president elect and the president elect of European association of
hypnosis at this Congress,he stated: “This presence means that world has
recognized Iran as an important country in Asia in this field, with all the past
congresses held here as an attestation to this fact.
Scientific secretory of the First World Congress of hypnodontics stated that some
of the most noteworthy and practical parts of this congress were three workshops
entitled : “ Hypnosis and tooth extraction,“Hypnosis in endodontic treatments “
and “Hypnosis in pediatric dentistry “ which were held a day before the
inauguration of the Congress as pre-congress workshops. In the following days
Dr.Fathi conducted tooth extraction and skin mole removal with the help of
hypnosis and without using drugs in the hall of the conference.
Talking about the present audience groups in this congress,Mehdi Fathi reiterated
that dental experts in general and specialized fields, those involved in dental
sciences in addition to psychiatry, psychology and consultation specialists were
among the prior groups in the congress, which will be credited for CME training
by The Ministry of Health and Medical Education.”
Besides, one can point to the participation of a considerable number of hypnosis
communities including International Society for Hypnosis,Swiss and German
Medical Societies for Hypnosis,German Society for Dental Hypnosis,French
Society for Hypnosis and British Dental Association .
The executive secretary of the congress also highlighted the psychological aspects
of dentistry as a unique feature of the congress in addition to introducing hypnotic
surgeries.

mentioned that it has been a year since the executive procedure of the congress has
started and the dimensions of this congress is fairly different from those held in the
past years.
